Quite often I see reference to “the truth” or “the universal truth” written in LinkedIn articles/ posts. These expressions fascinate me.

The fact of the matter is that there is no such phenomenon as a “single truth that is applicable to all human beings”. Such a notion is a fallacy – perhaps one of the greatest fallacies of all time.

Rather, within each of us we have values/ beliefs/ perceptions that we hold to be true for ourselves, and so when we share/ speak the truth, we communicate a point of view that aligns to (stems from) “our truth” – our honest opinion.

So “the truth”, like any other human perception, varies from individual to individual. The best that we can share with the world is “our truthful opinion“, which will then be interpreted/ construed/ judged by recipients to hold whatever level/ degree of truth that they deem is the case. And despite the degree of honesty of our expressed opinion, those privy to our message will form their own perception/ judgement as to level of honesty contained within.

At the end of the day people will believe what they wish to believe. What matters most is that when we do offer a point of view, then we provide our honest perspective – i.e. our truth.

I just wanted to get the above off my chest, hopefully to help people see that there is no such phenomenon as “the truth”; instead each of us has “a truth” that we know to be true for ourselves, and this truth varies from individual to individual.
