Every day life challenges us to make decisions and take action. These choices range from:

a) Getting out of bed in the morning to go to work or to perform some other activity, versus sleeping-in.

b) Having a nourishing breakfast, versus skipping breakfast either in reaction to some advertisement designed to make people feel guilty about eating in order to look lean, or because of time pressures.

c) Getting to work on time – versus being late for work due to choosing to attend to some other activity on the way to work.

d) …and even an attitude of “I will” make sure that I do XYZ today, versus “I’ll try” and make time to do XYZ today.

More often than not an attitude of “I’ll try” will amount to no action being taken at all. “I’ll try” really only amounts to “good intentions”. It also signals that the person communicating this expression is not fully committed to making the given decision/ performing the action required.

I will” people are typically:

  • People who keep their word, and carry-out actions as per what they promise/ verbalise (i.e. they “walk the talk”).
  • Fully committed to doing what they say they will do.
  • Self-confident, and back themselves (i.e. know their own capabilities/ strengths).
  • Determined.
  • People who can be relied upon.
  • Prepared to be held accountable for their decisions/ actions.

Which are you – a “Trier” or a “Doer” ? Which type of person would you prefer to have by your side – someone who expresses good intentions to perform a particular activity, or someone who gets on and gets the job done ?
